The Daily Grind: Professional Boundaries in Human Services

It’s imperative for human services professionals to adhere to boundaries when working with clients. However, it isn’t always black and white. Professionals are faced daily with ethical dilemmas and questions regarding boundaries.

This can be additionally challenging when working with different populations. Many of our own beliefs about the population we serve, experiences with our own family members or social expectations about the treatment of our clients all inform our ability to adhere to boundaries.
• Does one of your clients remind you of your beloved grandparent?
• Have you been hurt by painful things a client or patient has said to you?
• Have you been presented with a gift from a client who expresses aggressive insult when you politely decline the gift?

These are just a few of the scenarios that are possible when providing services to vulnerable populations.

In this 1-hour overview workshop, we will examine the definition of professional boundaries and work through case studies to help enhance your awareness of boundaries in everyday practice.

Dawn Shedrick, LCSW-R, is the founder and CEO of JenTex Training & Consulting, a professional development company that designs and delivers live and online continuing education workshops to social workers, mental health professionals and human services organizations.

Dawn is a licensed clinical social worker, trainer, consultant and certified life/business coach with a broad range of experience that includes community organizing, case management, clinical practice, community health education and executive administration.  Her interests and expertise lie in mental health equity for LGBTQ and gender nonconforming people across the lifespan, culturally competent trauma-informed treatment and healing models for LGBTQ trauma survivors, feminist social work practice, anti-oppressive social work practice and holistic approaches to clinical and administrative social work supervision.

In addition to her training and consulting in the health and human services, she has also designed and delivered mental and emotional wellness and LGBTQ inclusion seminars in corporate workplaces in including Travelers Insurance, JP Morgan Chase, GE, NY Mets Administration, Office Depot, GlaxoSmithKline, National Grid, Office Depot, Barnard College, St. John’s University and Canon USA North American Headquarters.

Dawn serves on the Board of Directors of the Network for Social Work Management and is an adjunct instructor in the Columbia University School of Social Work and St. Joseph’s College (NY) Department of Human Services.
